Stefano Pioli acknowledged the possibility of Rafael Leao featuring in the match against Inter on Wednesday but made it clear that if he is not fit to start, he will not even be considered for a place on the bench.
Leao had sustained a muscle injury during Milan’s 2-0 victory over Lazio on Saturday. Although he was not present during training on Monday, he was seen on the field working independently during Milan’s session on Tuesday.
Pioli spoke to Sky Sport Italia before his press conference on Tuesday, stating that Leao might be ready to play against Inter, but if he is not able to start, he will not be among the substitutes.
A final decision on Leao’s availability will be made by Pioli after Milan’s training session on Wednesday morning.
“Leao will continue to push tomorrow morning, if he feels well, he’ll play,” continued Pioli. “It’s still all open.”
Stefano Pioli coy about Leao’s fitness levels
Simone Inzaghi expressed his opinion on the potential absence of Rafael Leao during his pre-match press conference ahead of the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals against Milan.
Inzaghi discussed the significance of not facing Leao and what it would mean for his team’s performance on Wednesday.
“We all know the qualities of the player. We know that he may or may not be there, clearly we will take some precautions but ultimately, it will not change our game plan,” said the Nerazzurri boss.
“I’m not certain like you (that Leao won’t be involved), I’ve said it before. We know him, we know his qualities, and in these games every player who is called upon will give everything.”
