AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle United: Milan’s woes continue

Newcastle earns a point against tough opponents AC Milan on their return to the Champions League as Leao’s miss leads to Milan woes.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope had to showcase his skills to deny Rossoneri (AC Milan) in the first half.

Rafael Leao missed an incredible opportunity, letting Newcastle off the hook during their Champions League opener against AC Milan, which ended in a goalless draw.

Leao, a Portugal international and former teammate of Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali at San Siro before Tonali’s £53 million summer transfer to Newcastle, failed to score when he had only goalkeeper Nick Pope to beat. He attempted an audacious flick at the end of a dazzling 34th-minute run but ended up tripping himself.

Pope had already proven his worth by making five saves in the first half within six minutes, laying the foundation for Newcastle to secure a valuable point in their Group F debut in European football’s top competition after a 20-year absence.

For AC Milan, a seven-time Champions League winner, the night didn’t bring any redemption. Despite creating numerous opportunities, they couldn’t convert any of them, much to the frustration of the home fans among the 65,695 spectators in attendance.
