Inzaghi defends overhauling his squad against Real Sociedad

Simone Inzaghi justified his choice to overhaul the Inter squad in their 1-1 Champions League draw with Real Sociedad, affirming that it was the correct decision.

The Nerazzurri delivered a subpar performance in San Sebastian, conceding a goal in the early minutes when the high press exposed Alessandro Bastoni and allowed Brais Mendez to score the opener.

Real Sociedad also struck the goal frame, but Inter leveled the score with their initial shot on target. Lautaro Martinez redirected an errant Davide Frattesi attempt as he reached the back post.

“I predicted it could go like this, we were facing a quality opponent, we suffered, but did well to stay in the game,” Inzaghi told Amazon Prime Video Italia.

“We equalised and at the end of it wanted the win. It was our first match, we’ll take the point and realised what I had warned, which is that Real Sociedad are a quality team.”

Inzaghi admits Sociedad changes were mainly due to tired players

The performance appeared to be a significant departure from the team that secured a 5-1 victory over Milan in Serie A over the weekend, and perhaps making five changes to the starting lineup, which included Benjamin Pavard’s debut, was an excessive adjustment.

“I had many players who were tired, but everyone at Inter struggled in the first half, not just those who were changed. Yann Sommer helped us stay in the game and we did well in the final 20 minutes.”

Perhaps the most surprising decision was to rest Marcus Thuram and start Marko Arnautovic upfront instead.

“We have a large squad that we need to make the most of. Many players had issues after the derby and we needed to evaluate everything very carefully,” assured Inzaghi.

“I need everyone and would’ve made a few changes regardless, but I made more because some players were not in good shape. Playing after international duty, after a derby, this was the right thing to do.”
