2000 Galatasaray fans ended up in Old Trafford’s home end, claims Manchester United

Manchester United reports that during their Champions League clash with Galatasaray, 2000 of their fans ended up in the home end, mainly due to safety fears.

Manchester United has disclosed that approximately 2,000 Galatasaray fans found themselves in the Old Trafford home section during their recent Champions League match.

Television images and social media videos showed a significant number of Galatasaray fans in areas reserved for home supporters during the Turkish team’s lively 3-2 victory on October 3.

An investigation by Manchester United determined that roughly 2,000 tickets ended up with away fans. The club issued an apology to its fans for the ‘unacceptable situation’ and clarified that they chose not to eject the Galatasaray fans on the night to avoid potential security risks.

Despite the presence of a large number of Turkish fans in the home section, no incidents seemingly happened.

The events at Old Trafford were somewhat embarrassing for the club, as they acknowledged being caught off guard by Galatasaray. The Turkish giants only sold approximately half of their official allocation of 4,000 tickets.

Chief operating officer Collette Roche explained that ticket ‘bots’ had managed to purchase hundreds of tickets that ultimately ended up with visiting fans on the night.

Sales of tickets for future cup games will now be limited to accounts with a prior purchase history with the club.
