Napoli 1-1 Union Berlin: Fofana ends Union Berlin’s 12-match losing streak

Union Berlin’s 1-1 draw at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium put Napoli’s Champions League knockout stage qualification in doubt.

David Datro Fofana, on loan from Chelsea, nullified Matteo Politano’s earlier goal, granting Union their first Champions League point despite being at the bottom of Group C.

Napoli had two opportunities to take the lead within the first 15 minutes. Piotr Zielinski was denied by Union keeper Frederik Ronnow from close range after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia set him up.

Ronnow continued to keep Union in the game by saving Giacomo Raspadori’s chance moments later. Napoli, still missing their injured star striker Victor Osimhen, came close to scoring after 23 minutes.

Zielinski delivered a superb whipped cross with his left foot, finding Natan’s head, but the header hit the post. Napoli had a goal disallowed when VAR determined that Giovanni Di Lorenzo had pushed Jerome Roussillon with two hands before his header found Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa at the back post.

Nevertheless, Napoli took the lead in the 39th minute when full-back Mario Rui’s powerful cross deflected off Politano’s chest. Politano’s goal, his second in the Champions League and sixth in all competitions this season, put Napoli ahead.

Union Berlin, positioned third from the bottom in the Bundesliga, secured an unexpected equalizer in the 52nd minute as Sheraldo Becker got past his marker, and Fofana capitalized on a rebound from goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Napoli paid the price for their lackluster start to the second half, as Union Berlin pressed forward to seek a second goal.

Kvaratskhelia had two chances to score the winner but was unable to beat Ronnow. Napoli’s next fixture is against Real Madrid, while Union Berlin will face Braga.
