Lautaro Martinez believes that Inter ultimately deserved the victory in their away match against RB Salzburg.
RB Salzburg had been a tough opponent for Inter both at San Siro and on their own turf. In the final minutes of the match in Salzburg, a penalty was awarded to Inter when Nicolò Barella’s shot struck the hand of Mads Bistrup, and Lautaro Martinez successfully converted the spot-kick.
“I am very happy because we were in an extremely difficult group. We did our job against a great team that caused us problems.” Martinez told Amazon Prime Italia.
“We must always expect them to be this tough. They pressed us hard in the first half, then we pushed forward and ultimately deserved the victory.”
Lautaro Martinez has improved his penalty-taking abilities over the course of his career and has become more clinical from the spot.
“You can train only to a degree, but you need a bit of luck as well. After training, I stay behind to take set plays with Calhanoglu, Barella, Mkhitaryan, all those who feel like doing that.
“Scoring a goal in the Champions League is always special, so I am happy.”
Inter and Real Sociedad have secured their spots in the Round of 16, while RB Salzburg is in third place. Inter and Real Sociedad will compete for the top spot in their group, which could lead to a more favorable draw in the knockout stages. Inter’s improved European performances under Simone Inzaghi are evident, especially after reaching the Final last season.
“There are still two games to go, so we’ll see where we end up. We have been growing over the last three years, the team is maturing and we must continue like this.” said Lautaro Martinez.
