Lazio 2-0 Celtic: Super sub Immobile gets Lazio in the round of 16

Ciro Immobile silenced his critics and propelled Lazio towards the Champions League Round of 16 with a late brace against Celtic.

Lazio suffered a surprise defeat in the Serie A to Salernitana, missing several key players, including Alessio Romagnoli, Mattia Zaccagni, Nicolò Casale, and suspended Matias Vecino. Ivan Provedel played despite flu symptoms.

Celtic, who had only gained one point in the group phase, lost 2-1 in the reverse fixture, with Daizen Maeda and Luis Palma serving bans and Reo Hatate and Liel Abada injured.

The match saw weak attempts from surprise starter Gustav Isaksen and Kyogo Furuhashi, before Felipe Anderson’s diving header at the back post narrowly missed the target.

Patric had to clear a dangerous back-pass from Mario Gila that surprised Provedel. Luis Alberto then tested Joe Hart with a long-range effort, but Furuhashi’s angled drive flashed across Provedel and the far post after the restart.

Celtic vs Lazio: Rogers’ men came short in the UCL once again

Immobile, who came off the bench, bagged a late brace to seal the win for Lazio. His first goal came from a tight angle, and he doubled his tally with a clinical finish into the bottom left corner. The victory put Lazio on the verge of the Champions League Round of 16, with Immobile’s heroics silencing his critics.

In the match between Lazio and Celtic, Nicolò Rovella was booked and will be suspended for the final trip to Atletico Madrid. The game saw several chances for both teams, including a couple of free headers from corners by Castellanos that went over the bar, and an angled drive by Isaksen that skimmed the far post after being sent through on a Felipe Anderson pass.

Adam Marusic’s right-foot curler was also over the bar, while Provedel had to be alert to stop a Cameron Carter-Vickers header and Hyeongyu Oh attempt from distance. Ciro Immobile came off the bench and had a strike charged down, before his dummy let a Manuel Lazzari pass through for Luis Alberto to balloon over the bar.

The deadlock was finally broken when Isaksen cut inside from the right and his shot was deflected, turning into an accidental assist for Immobile to pounce at the back post and score from a tricky angle.
