Arsenal 1-1 PSV Eindhoven: Arsenal end group stage with an uninspired draw

Arsenal concluded their Champions League group-stage campaign with a closely contested 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven.

Despite already securing the top spot in their group, Arsenal displayed determination to secure additional points in their final group-stage match. Mikel Arteta opted for a varied starting lineup but introduced key players later in the game. However, Arsenal struggled to find the decisive final pass for the majority of the match.

PSV had a chance to take the lead early in the game when Patrick van Aanholt’s close-range tap-in was denied by Gabriel, who also managed to divert Ricardo Pepi’s follow-up away from danger. Vertessen hit the post with a header, and Johan Bakayoko’s attempt from range went wide, highlighting Arsenal’s lack of fluidity in the opening stages.

Arsenal’s first notable attempt came around the 30-minute mark when Mohamed Elneny’s low drive from outside the box hit the post and went wide. However, the Gunners began to find their rhythm, and Eddie Nketiah put them ahead just before halftime, slotting home Reiss Nelson’s cut-back.

PSV quickly equalized after the break, with Vertessen’s well-placed curled effort hitting the post and finding the back of Aaron Ramsdale’s net. Ismael Saibari also struck the post, and Jakub Kiwior’s goal was disallowed for offside, as Gabriel had jumped almost on top of his teammate.

In the closing moments, Arsenal faced a late scare as Guus Til went charging down on goal, but the substitute failed to capitalize on the counter, driving wide of Ramsdale’s goal.

Arsenal will now move to the last-16 stage of the Champions League with an advantage for the first since 2017.
