Carlo Ancelotti on Real Madrid’s substitution: ‘It was planned’

Carlo Ancelotti reassures about injury concerns after a Real Madrid player was substituted at half-time against Union Berlin.

Real Madrid secured a flawless win record in this season’s Champions League group stages with a 3-2 victory over Union Berlin at the Olympic Stadium. Despite falling behind in Berlin, goals from Joselu (twice) and Dani Ceballos secured the win for Los Blancos.

In a post-match interview with Movistar+ (via Marca), Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti described the encounter as “strange,” a sentiment likely shared by most spectators.

“It was a bit of a strange game. We controlled it well for 40 minutes. In two crazy minutes they made the game difficult for us. In the second half we tried to be a little more effective. We tried to cross more because we have a very good player in the air. He scored two goals with headers, and we hadn’t done that in the first half. When you have a striker like Joselu, you have to try more crosses.” Said Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

Federico Valverde’s half-time substitution for Real Madrid raised injury concerns. However, Ancelotti reassured everyone at full time, stating that the change was pre-planned.

“It was planned.”

With their perfect record in the Champions League group stages, Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid can now focus on the draw for the last 16. However, their immediate attention turns to the upcoming weekend match against Villarreal.
