‘Realist’ Ilkay Gundogan doesn’t rate Barcelona’s chances in the UCL

Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has acknowledged the challenging road ahead for his team in their quest for Champions League glory.

Barcelona has faced difficulties throughout their Champions League campaign. The team had to secure a victory on the last day of the group stage to progress to the last 16 and are considered underdogs in their bid to win the European title for the first time since 2015.

In an interview with Spanish outlet La Vanguardia, Gundogan conceded that the Blaugrana’s chances of Champions League success are slim: “There are other teams in the competition with more of a chance and better experience, but if we can reach the quarter finals, we are entering special territory. I am a realist, but I also know it’s difficult for everybody.”

Gundogan also revealed that he wasn’t expecting Xavi to resign from Barcelona’s top role: “I was surprised by Xavi’s decision to step down, I didn’t expect it. I wish I could have done more for him. I have that feeling.”

Xavi, who led Barcelona to their first La Liga title in four years less than nine months ago, is now set to depart the club. He announced in January that he will leave at the end of the season. Currently, Barcelona trails league leaders Real Madrid by eight points and has been eliminated from the Copa del Rey.

On Wednesday, Barcelona faces Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie. Napoli, the Serie A holders, have also faced challenges this season and currently sit in 9th place in the league table ahead of the match.
