Xavi bemoans Barcelona’s lost chances in a dominant display against Napoli

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez believes that ‘the fairest result would have been our victory’ following a 1-1 draw with Napoli in the Champions League.

Barcelona managed to draw the first leg of their last-16 clash 1-1 with Napoli in the Champions League. The scoring was opened by Robert Lewandowski at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after a dominant first 30 minutes for Barcelona, during which Alex Meret saved attempts from Lewandowski, Ilkay Gundogan, and Lamine Yamal.

However, Victor Osimhen seized the opportunity for Napoli with their only shot on target, scoring with an assist from Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa.

“We are a little sad at the result, we should’ve won the game,” Xavi told Amazon Prime Video Italia.

“Napoli barely managed anything in attack, we allowed them only one chance. These are the matches we ought to be winning, I think the fairest result would’ve been our victory.”

“After we took the lead, they woke up, which is precisely when we should’ve killed off the game. This is the Champions League.”

Similar to Napoli, Barcelona is also experiencing a disastrous season, despite winning the domestic title last season. They started out as the more confident team this evening.

“I really liked the performance from the team, I saw progress both in attack and defence. The performance was more than good, we just had to finish it off.”

The second leg is scheduled to take place in Barcelona on March 12. However, due to ongoing restructuring work at Camp Nou. The match is at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys instead.
