Barcelona missed out on another piece of silverware as they lost to Athletic Bilbao in Copa del Rey but Xavi claims that they ‘tried’.
Barcelona’s prospects of securing a trophy this season have dwindled to a maximum of 50%, following their elimination from the Copa del Rey on Wednesday with a 4-2 defeat to Athletic Club in the quarter-final clash at San Mames.
The Catalans faced a challenging loss as they struggled to match Ernesto Valverde’s side, which relentlessly pushed through the entire 120 minutes in Bilbao. Unfortunately, Barcelona was unable to thwart their opponent’s efforts.
Following the match, Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez addressed the media and conveyed his pride in his team’s performance, as reported by Marca.
“We tried. I think we competed well against a great team that is very strong at home. I already said after the draw that we hadn’t been lucky with the opponent. We can be proud that we’ve tried.”
Xavi also emphasized the need for his team to swiftly recover, highlighting that they have two remaining trophies to compete for in the remainder of the campaign.
“We have to rebuild ourselves and compete in La Liga and the Champions League.”
While this result and performance were not excessively disappointing for Barcelona, it adds further pressure on Xavi. It is likely that he will need to secure victory in one of the two remaining trophies to secure his position for the next season.
