Captain Van Dijk ‘proud’ to be Liverpool player after scoring winner in Carabao Cup final

Liverpool captain Virgen Van Dijk says he is ‘proud’ to be part of this club after scoring the winner in the EFL Cup final against Chelsea.

Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley on Sunday to claim a record-extending 10th Carabao Cup. Captain Virgil van Dijk headed the winner in the 118th minute to secure the first trophy in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club.

Van Dijk who lifted his first trophy as Liverpool captain, said he is ‘proud’ of his teammates after their performance in the final. The injury-hit Liverpool team had to finish the match with a youthful line-up.

He told Sky Sports: “It means so much. All the young boys on the pitch in extra-time… it’s incredible, I’m so proud of the team. It was an intense game, for both sides. It’s amazing: first trophy as Liverpool captain. It’s all for the fans, so let’s enjoy it.

“[On the bundle after the goal] I didn’t want to get injured, I tried to get up quickly! Nah, listen, it’s emotion. I’m so proud of the boys. All the young boys playing their part in what we achieved, it’s incredible. Onto more.

“We never take these things for granted. We’re very blessed. We could have lost today we didn’t – we did the job. I’m so proud to be part of this club, and especially proud of the boys.

Liverpool still has a chance to win the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup this season.
