Chelsea’s Reece James gets charged by the FA following Aston Villa defeat

The Football Association (FA) has charged Chelsea captain Reece James with confronting an official following his team’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Despite being sidelined due to injury, Reece James confronted an official in the tunnel after Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday. The FA has chosen to charge him for purportedly using “improper and/or insulting and/or abusive words” towards the official.

Reece James, who is 23 years old, was not included in Chelsea’s squad for the weekend’s match against Villa, in which his team suffered a defeat. The English international has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since the beginning of the Premier League season after the opening match against Liverpool.

Nonetheless, he was present at the match and chose to engage in a heated discussion with the official following the game, potentially leading to a suspension as a consequence of his actions.

A statement read: “Reece James has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 following Chelsea’s Premier League game against Aston Villa on Sunday, 24 September. It’s alleged that the defender used improper and/or insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards a match official in the tunnel after the game. Reece James has until Friday, 29 September, to provide a response to this charge.”

He will aim to expedite his recovery from the injury, but he must first provide a response to the FA’s allegations before any determination regarding potential sanctions is made.
