Guardiola jokes that City wants the treble after losing to Newcastle in the EFL Cup

Pep Guardiola maintains that Manchester City are content with winning the treble, as their quest for the quadruple this season was brought to an end by Newcastle.

City’s aspirations of securing all four major trophies were thwarted when Alexander Isak netted a goal within the first 10 minutes of the second half during the third round Carabao Cup match at St. James’ Park on Wednesday.

Guardiola implemented seven lineup changes from their weekend win over Nottingham Forest and opted to start prolific scorer Erling Haaland on the bench.

Even though the experimental starting XI fielded by the Spanish manager failed to deliver the desired results despite dominating the first half of the game, Guardiola was satisfied with his team’s performance and has no concerns about falling short of a potential quadruple.

“You think the target was the quadruple? We are more than happy with the treble,” he told Sky Sports after the match.

He added: “We played an incredible game. They increased after the break and were more aggressive. They scored a goal. Last season we were out against Southampton and not there but tonight we were. Congratulations to Newcastle.”

Guardiola provided a rare start to Kalvin Phillips, but the midfielder couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity, delivering a mediocre performance against Newcastle. Nevertheless, the manager commended Phillips while evaluating his performance and also expressed praise for Oscar Bobb.
