Dominik Szoboszlai gives an update on his injury

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has reassured fans that his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury “won’t take long” after being sidelined for this week’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.

Szoboszlai sustained the injury during Liverpool’s initial match of 2024 – the 4-2 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League – and had to leave the game just over an hour into the contest.

Having missed the FA Cup third-round triumph against Arsenal on Sunday, he will once again be unavailable for the Carabao Cup clash against Fulham at Anfield on Wednesday evening. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about a relatively short recovery period.

“I’m getting better,” Szoboszlai told M4 Sport at an awards event in his homeland on Monday night. “The first game of the year didn’t go as planned [for me], but it won’t take long and I’ll be back.”

Liverpool will enter English football’s winter break after Wednesday night, providing the Reds with a ten-day break before their upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth on January 21.

The hope for Szoboszlai is that he could be available again by that time, with manager Jurgen Klopp commenting in the wake of the New Year’s Day injury: “We will see. After [Arsenal and Fulham], hopefully, he might be back.”

Szoboszlai has played a crucial role at Liverpool following his £60 million move from RB Leipzig, contributing to a much-needed midfield reconstruction at Anfield during a summer that saw the departure of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The 23-year-old was accompanied by Alexis Mac Allister, whose transfer from Brighton could reach up to £55 million, along with Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch. Although Liverpool didn’t reinforce other areas of the squad, the team currently leads the Premier League table after 20 games.
