Cole Palmer addresses Chelsea’s ‘billion-pound bottlejobs’ situation

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer believes that the Blues have faced unwarranted criticism following last month’s Carabao Cup final, particularly after Gary Neville labeled them “billion-pound bottlejobs”.

Despite much focus on the youthfulness of several Liverpool players due to injuries, with Jurgen Klopp fielding numerous teenagers, Palmer points out that Chelsea’s squad, labeled as “billion-pound bottlejobs” by Gary Neville, is also predominantly young. Out of the 15 players who participated in the final, eight were aged 23 or younger, with 29-year-old Raheem Sterling being the eldest. Thiago Silva, the only outfield player above 30, missed the game due to injury.

Palmer contends that Chelsea’s struggles cannot be because of a lack of quality in the squad.

“I feel like we’re good enough,” he told i. “We’re young, but we’re good players. So once we gel, we’ll be alright. Try and get to another final in the FA Cup, push as high in the league as we can, and keep going game by game and getting the team to gel.”

At just 21 years old, Palmer’s transfer from Manchester City to Chelsea for £42.5 million drew attention, especially considering his limited experience with only 41 first-team games under his belt at the time of the transfer.

“I didn’t even think about the fee when I moved,” he continued. “I just thought, ‘everyone’s talking about the fee, but they’ve not even seen me play’. They’ve seen me play a few times but no one’s actually seen me play. So I didn’t really listen to it. I didn’t know how it was going to go when I came here but to get the opportunity to play every week, that’s why I came – for game time.”
