Jurgen Klopp offered an update on Virgil van Dijk’s status as the defender was absent from Liverpool’s FA Cup encounter against Arsenal on Sunday due to illness.
The Dutch star, who was dealing with a viral infection, did not feature in Liverpool’s matchday squad for the FA Cup third round. Klopp shared a lighthearted update on Van Dijk‘s condition after the game, indicating that he could recover in time for Liverpool’s upcoming match.
At his post-match press conference, the Reds manager was asked if the talismanic centre-half will return for a semi-final first leg clash with Fulham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, to which he replied: “We hope so. It’s difficult for Virgil to look sh*t, but he did.”
Despite the absence of several key first-team players, Liverpool secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates. The deadlock was broken by Jakub Kiwior’s own goal, and Luis Diaz added a late second, allowing Liverpool to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Following their FA Cup success, Klopp’s team will shift their focus to another cup competition, facing Fulham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Anfield midweek. Subsequently, Liverpool will have an 11-day break before their next Premier League fixture, an away match against Bournemouth.
