League One’s Bristol Rovers sack manager Joey Barton

Bristol Rovers have sacked their manager, former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton, while the club is in 16th place in League One.

Barton’s tenure at Bristol Rovers has lasted for two and a half years, but his departure comes after a series of poor results, with Rovers winning just one of their last five games.

The League One club has appointed Andy Mangan as interim manager, with support from Glenn Whelan, Danny Ventre, and Anssi Jaakkola.

A Rovers statement read: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Joey for all his efforts and wish him well in the future.”

Barton assumed control of the club while they were in a League One relegation fight in February 2021 but couldn’t prevent their relegation to the fourth tier.

Despite this setback, he remained with Rovers for the subsequent season and helped them secure promotion back to the third tier by finishing third in League Two during the 2021-22 season.

In the last season, Rovers finished 17th in League One, comfortably staying eight points clear of the relegation zone.
