Ajax sack manager Maurice Steijn after a historically bad run of games

Ajax and Maurice Steijn have mutually agreed to part ways following a poor run of results, with the team securing only five points.

This decision comes after a 4-3 loss to Utrecht added to their disappointing start to the new season, placing the team in the relegation zone after seven games. Steijn’s tenure at the club ends after just 11 matches in charge.

“Ajax and Maurice Steijn are parting ways with immediate effect,” read a club statement. “The club management and Steijn have jointly decided that the trainer will resign his duties. Steijn arrived at Ajax from Sparta Rotterdam last summer and signed a contract in Amsterdam until June 30, 2026.”

The decision to part ways with Steijn was expected, given that Ajax is currently enduring its poorest run of results since 1954.

Ajax has not secured a victory since August and has not recorded a clean sheet since September 3. Furthermore, the match on Sunday was marred by incidents involving objects thrown onto the pitch, leading to the game being suspended twice due to crowd disorder.
