Italy boss Roberto Mancini resigns ten months before the Euro 2024

After over five years as Italy’s head coach, Roberto Mancini has stepped down from his position, with his replacement expected to be announced soon.

Having taken the helm of the Italian national team in 2018, Mancini’s tenure witnessed a mix of successes and challenges. Notably, he guided his team to victory in Euro 2020, triumphing over England in the final at Wembley. However, their journey hit a setback when they failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The 58-year-old has departed from his role immediately, having reached an agreement with the Italian Federation to part ways. This decision comes just ten months prior to the start of Euro 2024.

A statement from the Italian Federation reads: “The Italian Football Federation announces that it has taken note of the resignation of Roberto Mancini from the position of coach of the Italian national team, received late yesterday evening.

“Thus concludes a significant page in the history of the Azzurri, which began in May 2018 and concluded with the 2023 Nations League Finals; in between, the victory at Euro 2020, a triumph conquered by a group in which all the individuals have known how to become a team.

“Taking into account the important and close commitments for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers (10 and 12 September with North Macedonia and Ukraine), the FIGC will announce the name of the new national coach in the next few days.”

Mancini won’t be heading Italy in their defence in Euro 2024

But having helmed the team for five years, the ex-Man City manager boasts an impressive track record. Over this period, his leadership yielded 37 victories, 15 draws, and a mere nine losses.

Despite Italy holding the eighth spot in the global rankings, the reigning European champions will face the forthcoming tournament in Germany without Mancini at the helm. The former Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti being will be one of the top choices for the role.
