Emi Martinez ‘proud’ of Lionel Messi for staying with Argentina squad despite injury

Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez says he is ‘proud’ of Lionel Messi for staying with the Argentina squad despite being ruled out by injury.

Lionel Messi was left out of Argentina’s squad for the match against Bolivia in La Paz on Tuesday night. Inter Miami star did not leave the camp and stayed with his teammates despite struggling with an injury.

After a 3-0 win against Bolivia, Emi Martinez praised Messi for staying with other Argentinian players in the camp.

“There is hunger. It’s the same captain that could have went home but he accompanied us. That makes us proud that he continues to feel, continues to love and accompany us in that sense. I am proud to be behind these boys.”

Aston Villa keeper also thanked Bolivian fans for their warm welcome for him.

“Normally, they don’t like me much outside of Argentina,” Martinez chuckled. “But today the Bolivian people surprised me that they chanted my name and I have a lot of respect for this country.”

Argentina will face Paraguay and Peru in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in October.
