Ballon d’Or 2023: Lionel Messi on top of the World again!

In an exciting edition of the ceremony, Argentina captain and Inter Miami striker Lionel Messi has been handed the Ballon d’Or 2023 award, the eighth in his career!

Following a lengthy ceremony where all the 30 Ballon d’Or 2023 nominees were named, Argentine’s legendary striker Lionel Messi was awarded his record eighth Ballon d’Or trophy.

Lionel Messi was up against strong contenders like Erling Haaland, who helped Manchester City win the Treble with his 50+ goals, and Kylian Mbappe, who helped France reach their second consecutive World Cup final and won the Golden Boot of the competition.

Other big winners of the night were Aitana Bonmati for the Women’s Ballon d’Or 2023, Erling Haaland for the Gerd Muller Trophy, Jude Bellingham for the Kopa Trophy and Emiliano Martinez for the Lev Yachine Trophy.

Messi Is Infinity!

The Inter Miami forward was one of the top contenders for the award presented by France Football. He triumphed over rivals such as Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, and Kylian Mbappe to reclaim the title of the best player in world football.

Messi’s most notable achievement during the 2022/23 season, which was the relevant timeframe for the award, was leading Argentina to victory in the World Cup in Qatar in late 2022. This triumph put an end to La Albiceleste’s 36-year-long wait for their third global championship.

The former Barcelona star scored in every round from the group stage to the final, where Argentina won the trophy on penalties against France at Lusail Iconic Stadium, despite a stunning hat-trick from his then PSG teammate Mbappe.

Following the expiration of his two-year contract with PSG in June, he made the move to Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, guiding them to their first major silverware, the Leagues Cup.

This year’s victory adds to Messi’s previous Ballon d’Or wins in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2021. He now holds a three-golden-ball lead over his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who was not among the finalists this year.

How does the Ballon d’Or voting work?

The Ballon d’Or is organized and presented by France Football magazine. One hundred journalists from FIFA’s top 100 member nations participate in the voting process. They select five players from the 30-player shortlist and rank them from 1 to 5, with the votes allocated in descending order. The player who receives the most votes is awarded the top prize.

In the 2022 Ballon d’Or, Karim Benzema of Real Madrid won the award by the second largest margin in its history, surpassing Sadio Mane by 356 votes. The only other time a player won by a larger margin was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016, when he defeated Lionel Messi by 429 votes. This format allows for a fair and competitive selection process involving journalists from diverse nations.

The players on each jury member’s list were awarded points as follows:

  • First: Six points
  • Second: Four points
  • Third: Three points
  • Fourth: Two points
  • Fifth: One point
