Arteta claims ne could ‘never be wrong’ awarding Messi the Ballon d’Or

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes that Lionel Messi deserved to secure his record-eighth Ballon d’Or accolade.

The Spanish coach asserted that Messi’s victory in the 2022 World Cup with Argentina at the age of 36 made him the top candidate for the Ballon d’Or. He also commended Messi’s unwavering consistency and dedication to the game as he reaches the later stages of his career.

Speaking to reporters, Arteta said: “When you talk about Messi it can never be wrong. What he’s done, he won the World Cup, at his age, it was the pinnacle of his career. It’s just incredible, the consistency that he’s shown, the level that he’s put football into.”

The 36-year-old successfully outperformed the competition from Manchester City’s prolific goal-scorer, Erling Haaland, and his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate, Kylian Mbappe, to secure his record-breaking eighth Golden Ball in Paris on Monday.

Following the conclusion of the MLS season for Inter Miami, as they did not qualify for the playoffs, Messi’s next appearance could be with La Albiceleste on November 17 when they face Uruguay in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
