Rodrygo’s father has taken aim at Lionel Messi following their heated argument in the 2026 World Cup qualifier between Brazil & Argentina.
Rodrygo reportedly has accused Messi of “acting like cowards”. The Argentina captain is said to have responded by saying: “We are the world champions, how are we cowards? Watch your mouth.”
Now Rodrygo’s father has got involved in the argument by sharing images of Messi and Rodrigo De Paul confronting his son on Instagram. He wrote alongside photos: “Is anyone surprised. The little saint who never causes trouble with anyone.”
After his argument with Messi went viral on social media, Rodrygo revealed that he received racist messages.
“Racists are always on duty. My social networks were invaded with insults and all sorts of nonsense,” he wrote on Instagram.
“If we don’t do what they want, if we don’t behave as they think we should, if we wear something that annoys them, if we don’t lower our heads when they attack us, if we occupy spaces they think are theirs alone, the racists will act out their criminal behaviour. Bad luck for them. We won’t stop.”
Brazil suffered its first-ever home World Cup qualifying defeat after Argentina won the match with one goal. However, the match was overshadowed by pre-match crowd trouble that caused a delay in kick-off. Brazilian police used batons on Argentina fans in response to fighting in the stands during the national anthems.
Argentina is at the top of the CONMEBOL qualification table, while Brazil is in sixth place after three consecutive defeats.
