Liverpool star Mohamed Salah will miss Egypt’s next two fixtures at the AFCON, but appears to have avoided a serious injury.
Egyptian Football Association confirmed on Saturday that Mohamed Salah will miss the final Group B fixture against Cape Verde and their last-16 round match as well.
Mohamed Salah had to go off injured toward the end of the first half of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations game against Ghana, which ended in a 2-2 draw on Thursday.
“The X-rays that Mohamed Salah, the captain of the Egyptian national team, underwent, showed that he suffered a hamstring strain,” an Egyptian Football Association statement read.
“And he will miss the team’s next two matches in the Africa Cup of Nations against Cape Verde, and then the round of 16 match in the event of qualification.”
That means the 31-year-old will not be out for a long time, and it will undoubtedly be a major boost for Liverpool.
Egypt is in second place in Group B, with just two points after two matches. Ghana and Mozambique each have a point. Cape Verde has already qualified for the last 16 round with six points.
Salah scored a 97th-minute penalty equalizer for Egypt in their tournament opener against Mozambique. Salah and Egypt finished as runners-up in this tournament in 2017 and 2021. He has scored 54 goals and provided 32 assists in 96 matches for Egypt.
