Indonesian footballer Septain Raharja has lost his life after a freak lightning accident in a match in Indonesia. Septain Raharja was participating in a friendly between 2 FLO FC Bandung and FBI Subang when lightning hit him at Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung, West Java.
Reports from PRFM News indicated that the 35-year-old Septain Raharja was still breathing after the incident on Saturday afternoon but succumbed to his injuries later in a local hospital due to severe burns. A video clip capturing the lightning strike quickly spread on social media platforms, prompting an outpouring of condolences.
This marks the second occurrence of a lightning strike involving an Indonesian player in the past year. Last year, a player in Bojonegoro, East Java, was reportedly struck by lightning during the Soeratin Under-13 Cup. Despite suffering a cardiac arrest, the young player was successfully resuscitated at a local hospital.
In memory of Septain, who hailed from Subang, several Indonesian teams observed a moment of silence. Ahead of the match between FBI Mageland and Erka, players from both sides bowed their heads in honor of their fellow footballer.
Further tributes are expected for the 35-year-old. Notably, an analysis conducted by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency revealed that the lightning strike originated from a cloud merely 300 meters above the stadium at the time of impact.
