Ederson and Gabriel Martinelli withdraw from Brazil’s squad

Gabriel Martinelli from Arsenal and Ederson from Manchester City have pulled out of the Brazil squad for upcoming international friendlies due to injuries.

The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) announced the changes on Monday night, revealing replacements for Gabriel Martinelli and Ederson in the original squad selected by head coach Dorival Junior at the beginning of March.

Galeno from Porto will take Martinelli’s place, while Leo Jardim from Vasco da Gama will step in for Ederson. Additionally, Flamengo defender Fabricio Bruno has been called up to replace Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos, who is also sidelined due to injury.

These new additions bring an experimental touch to the Brazilian squad, as all three players have never represented the senior national team before. The squad, which will face England at Wembley and Spain at the Bernabeu on March 23 and 26 respectively, now includes 11 uncapped players out of 26. Notably, all three goalkeepers in the squad, including the usual starter Alisson who is already ruled out, are uncapped. Only nine players in the squad have reached double figures in international caps.

Both Martinelli and Ederson are doubtful for the upcoming crucial Premier League encounter between Arsenal and Manchester City on March 31. Over the weekend, Arsenal climbed above both City and Liverpool in the title race standings.

Martinelli sustained a foot injury during Arsenal’s recent 6-0 victory over Sheffield United, forcing him off the pitch. On the other hand, Ederson suffered an injury during City’s match against Liverpool at Anfield, where he conceded a penalty while challenging Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez. Ederson could be sidelined for up to four weeks, potentially leading to Stefan Ortega starting in goal for City in their upcoming FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle United on Saturday.
