Ukraine, Poland, and Georgia qualify for Euro 2024 after playoff drama

Ukraine, Poland, and Georgia have booked their place at Euro 2024 after play-off final victories on Tuesday night.

Ukraine qualified for the Euro 2024 after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Iceland in their playoff final in Poland on Tuesday. Albert Gudmundsson put Iceland ahead in the first half, but Ukraine won the match thanks to second-half goals from Viktor Tsygankov and Mykhailo Mudryk.

The hosts Ukraine played in the Polish city of Wroclaw due to Russia’s February 2022 invasion. Ukraine now will play with Belgium, Slovakia, and Romania in Group E.

Georgia also reached their first major tournament after a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Greece on Tuesday. Both teams failed to score in the playoff final after 120 minutes. Greece who won the Euro 2004, has failed to qualify for the last two World Cup and three European Championships.

Georgia will take on Portugal, Turkey, and the Czech Republic in Group F at Euro 2024 this summer.

Poland qualified for Euro 2024 thanks to a 5-4 penalty shootout win against Wales on Tuesday night. The game finished 0-0 following a tense 120 minutes. Wales failed to qualify for the Euro for the first time since 2012.

Wojciech Szczesny saved Daniel James’ penalty in Wales’ men’s side’s first penalty shootout in a competitive match. Poland failed to register a single shot on target during the entire 120 minutes before the shootout.

Robert Lewandowski’s now joined France, Netherlands, and Austria in Group D at Euro 2024 in Germany.
