Nigeria’s Terem Moffi, from French club Nice, to replace injured Victor Boniface in Africa Cup of Nations squad, as announced on Tuesday.
Last month, Nigeria unexpectedly left out the 24-year-old Moffi, despite him scoring six goals in Ligue 2 this season and featuring in their two previous matches in November.
On Monday, Boniface, aged 23, was on the sideline list due to a groin injury sustained at the Nigerian training camp in Abu Dhabi.
Bayer Leverkusen’s leading scorer, Boniface, has netted 10 goals in 16 league games this season for the Bundesliga leaders.
In addition to Boniface’s injury, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who sustained an injury during Leicester City’s 2-0 victory at Cardiff City on December 29, has also withdrawn from the squad.
Leicester teammate Kelechi Iheanacho is grappling with an injury, and his status is currently under assessment. There is an expectation that the striker will recover in time for the tournament, set to commence on Saturday.
Equatorial Guinea will be Nigeria’s first opponent in Group A as they kick off their opening game in Abidjan on Sunday.
