Let’s start with the first team of Group D of AFCON 2023, Algeria. Algeria showed us how to defend in the right way. The team looked completely different from the one that won the trophy in 2019. But it’s worth mentioning that this team has an unbeatable record of 35 matches since January 2022. During their fantastic history, they won AFCON twice, and this year, they will try to defend their title. Their main opponent in AFCON 2023 Group D is Burkina Faso.

Their Algerian coach Djamel Belmadi, who represented The Algerian national team between 2000 and 2004, called up these 27 players for the tournament:

Goalkeepers: Anthony Mandrea – Rais Mbolhi – Oussama Benbot

Defenders: Youcef Atal – Kévin Guitoun – Rayan Aït-Nouri – Yasser Larouci – Aïssa Mandi – Mohamed Amine Tougaï – Ramy Bensebaïni – Ahmed Touba – Zineddine Belaïd

Midfielders: Nabil Bentaleb – Sofiane Feghouli – Houssem Aouar – Farès Chaïbi – Ramiz Zerrouki – Hicham Boudaoui – Ismaël Bennacer

In 2023, Algeria participated in 10 matches, winning seven and drawing three. One of the most significant victories was a confidence-boosting 1-0 win against the current African champions, Senegal, in an away game. It was particularly noteworthy because Senegal had not lost a home match for almost a decade before that game. According to the news of teams in AFCON 2023, they look forward to qualifying from the group stage.

The national team coach, Hubert Velud, must have his sights set on the trophy. Despite not being considered a top contender, Burkina Faso has demonstrated its quality at the continental level.

Here is a look at Burkina Faso squad for AFCON 2023 Group D:

Who will shine in this group? There are many players in the AFCON 2023 Group D that can take advantage of their side. Here are some of them:

Riyad Mahrez: Despite moving to Saudi Arabia, former Manchester City player Mahrez has not lost any of his exceptional skills and remains a guaranteed starter. Throughout the 2023-24 Saudi Pro League, the 32-year-old has been the top creator of opportunities for his Al-Ahli teammates, with 60 chances created. Additionally, he holds the highest expected assists (xA) total of 7.9 in the league.

Bertrand Traoré: Despite having limited playing time with Aston Villa this season, Bertrand Traoré remains the team’s leader. He uniquely can elevate his performance to god-like levels when representing the national team. Even if he is only at 80% match readiness, he will probably still be included in the starting lineup of Group D teams in AFCON 2023.

Babacar Niasse: Standing at an impressive height of 6-foot-5, Babacar Niasse possesses remarkable reach and effortlessly collects balls from corners and free kicks without stretching his arms. Niasse is a member of a team that remains one of the most captivating narratives in recent AFCON history.

Zito Luvumbo: being among the youngsters of AFCON 2023 Group D, he has a great career in the Serie A club Cagliari. He is the player who has the most goal involvement in Serie A’s 2023-24 season so far. With this potential, he can greatly help Angola in this year’s tournament.
