There is a disagreement between Didier Deschamps and Karim Benzema regarding how the Real Madrid striker left France’s World Cup camp
France coach Didier Deschamps hopes to resolve the ongoing public disagreement with Karim Benzema, which began during the World Cup when the Real Madrid striker had to withdraw from the squad due to a thigh injury.
Deschamps puts the Benzema situation behind him
Deschamps claimed that Benzema had told him that he would not be able to return to the French camp for the later stages of the tournament.
Benzema returned to training with Real Madrid in early December, which sparked rumors that he might return to the French squad for their trophy defense. However, he did not make a comeback, and France lost to Argentina in the final.
Deschamps stated in an interview with Le Parisien that he had spoken to Benzema after his injury scan, and Benzema declared his World Cup dreams were over.
Deschamps advised Benzema not to leave in a hurry, but he left the next day anyway.
“When I wake up, I learn that he is gone,” Deschamps said in the newspaper interview. “It’s his decision, he won’t tell you otherwise, I understand and respect it.”
During an appearance on TF1 show Telefoot on Sunday, Didier Deschamps declined to fuel the ongoing public dispute with Karim Benzema.
The Real Madrid striker had responded to Deschamps’ earlier claims that Benzema had ruled himself out of returning to the French squad during the 2022 World Cup due to injury. Benzema took to his Instagram stories, posting a clown emoji and accusing Deschamps of lying.
The French tactician said: “I am not in the controversy. I needed to speak to say what had happened. But that is a thing of the past for me.”
The French striker will take a break after Sunday’s El Clasico
