Unai Emery: Good Luck opened the door for our victory

Aston Villa’s comeback victory over AZ Alkmaar was acknowledged by manager Unai Emery, who conceded that luck played a role in their success.

Ollie Watkins’ decisive goal has brought Unai Emery’s side close to securing qualification in the Europa Conference League following a 2-1 home victory. However, their comeback began controversially when Diego Carlos equalized after a missed chance by Boubacar Kamara, and a mistaken corner call by referee Luis Godinho.

Despite Vangelis Pavlidis giving AZ Alkmaar the lead, Villa‘s win puts them in second place in Group E, with progression to the next round within reach if they earn a point in their final two games.

Unai Emery said: “It was a very good chance for Kamara. It was fantastic. But it was not a corner, it’s clear, and after this mistake we score.

“I’m very happy because when we are winning a game like tonight we can understand this competition better and the processes we’re trying to build.

I’m very proud of our work in this competition. We’re getting better. We scored one that was offside more or less. We have to accept the referee’s decision, always.

“I’m very proud of our work in this competition. We’re getting better. AZ are a very good team. I’m very happy. The reaction when they scored the goal was fantastic.” Said Unai Emery.

Aston Villa had a bright start, with Clement Lenglet’s headed goal ruled offside. AZ Alkmaar gained momentum, and Vangelis Pavlidis opened the scoring early in the second half. Diego Carlos equalized for Villa, capitalizing on a missed chance by Boubacar Kamara. Ollie Watkins secured the win, heading in Douglas Luiz’s pass.

The victory puts Unai Emery’s team on the verge of qualification in the Europa Conference League, sitting second in Group E.
