BREAKING NEWS: Germany head coach Hansi Flick sacked following Japan loss

Germany has made a shocking decision and have sacked their head coach Hansi Flick following a 4-1 defeat to Japan.

Japan’s 4-1 thrashing of Die Mannschaft marks Germany’s fourth defeat in their last five matches. Flick’s men recently put out some poor performances, winning just one of their last six matches.

As a result, the German football association (DFB) has decided to part ways with Flick immediately. Rudi Voller will take over as interim coach, with support from Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner.

For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far.

Neuendorf

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf has confirmed Flick’s departure in an official statement, which reads: “The committees agreed that the Men’s Senior National Team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results. We need facing that [2024] European Championship a spirit of optimism and confidence in our own country. For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far. Because I appreciate Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. So the decision was inevitable.”

Flick managed to secure only 12 wins out of 25 matches during his tenure, taking over in August 2021 as a replacement for Joachim Low. His leadership also coincided with Germany’s disappointing performance in the 2022 World Cup, resulting in an early exit in the group stage.

The DFB is now focused on appointing a long-term successor to Flick as they prepare for the upcoming European Championship, which Germany will host in just nine months.

With Flick now sacked, Voller will oversee Germany’s next friendly match against France on Tuesday from the touchline. The DFB aims to appoint a permanent manager before the October international break, during which Germany is scheduled to play friendly matches against the USMNT and Mexico in quick succession.
