As a 14-year-old, James Rodriguez played his first match in the Colombian first division against Envigado on 21 May 2006, when he was playing for Envigado, Colombia’s second division club.

His debut was on 7 February 2009 after moving to Banfield, an Argentine team. After scoring his first goal against Rosario Central on 27 February, James became a first-choice player the following season and appeared in every game. He ended his first season with a goal in 11 matches.

During his three years at Banfield, the Colombian footballer scored ten goals and provided eight assists for his teammates. James Bond of Banfield moved to Porto for €5.1 million on 6 July 2010. As part of this friendly game, he scored his first goal against Ajax on 18 July.

James Rodriguez’s first goal in Europe was a competitive goal against Bulgarian club CSKA Sofia. It was on 7 September 2020 that James joined Premier League club Everton for a free transfer. He signed a two-year deal with the club with an option for a third season.
