He made his debut on February 6, 2011 against Málaga. Throughout the 2011-2012 season, Rakitic played 39 matches for the club, providing six assists and scoring one goal in the Copa del Rey. 

In the 2014 Europa League, he played a crucial role by assisting in the semi-final first leg, resulting in a 2-0 victory over Valencia, winning the tie and advancing to the Europa League Final. The 2018 World Cup marked the Croatian National Team’s best-ever performance. During the tournament, on 1 July, Rakitic scored the decisive penalty against Denmark, helping Croatia advance to the quarter-finals. A week later, on 7 July, he again scored the winning penalty kick in the shoot-out against Russia, propelling Croatia to the semi-finals.
