He has won several trophies and awards in his career, including six domestic league titles, five EFL Cups, two FA Cups, one UEFA Champions League, and one UEFA Super Cup. Gundogan has also represented Germany at four major tournaments, scoring 17 goals in 67 appearances.
Early life and career
Gundogan was born on 24 October 1990 in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia to Turkish parents. His grandfather was a guest worker on his father’s side who moved from Balikesir, Turkey, to the Ruhr region of Germany to work as a miner. His wife stayed in Turkey with their children where they grew up and went to school. Gundogan started playing football at the age of four and joined SV Gelsenkirchen-Hessler 06, a local club. He later had a brief spell at Schalke 04 but left the club after being diagnosed with growth problems. He then returned to SV Gelsenkirchen-Hessler 06 and also played for SSV Buer and VfL Bochum’s youth teams.
Gundogan made his senior debut for VfL Bochum II in 2008, scoring one goal in two appearances. He then moved to FC Nurnberg in 2009, where he established himself as a regular starter and a key player. He made 53 appearances and scored eight goals for the club, helping them finish sixth in the Bundesliga in the 2010-11 season. His performances attracted the attention of Borussia Dortmund, who signed him in 2011 for a reported fee of €5.5 million.
Gundogan joined Borussia Dortmund at a time when they were dominating German football under manager Jurgen Klopp. He quickly adapted to their high-intensity and pressing style of play and formed a formidable partnership with Sven Bender in midfield. He won the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal in his first season with the club, scoring three goals and providing seven assists in 39 games across all competitions.
In the 2012-13 season, Gundogan reached new heights as he played a vital role in Dortmund’s run to the UEFA Champions League final, where they faced Bayern Munich at Wembley Stadium. He scored Dortmund’s only goal from the penalty spot in a 2-1 defeat, becoming the first German player to score in a Champions League final since Stefan Effenberg in 2001. He also scored six goals and provided six assists in 45 games in all competitions that season.
However, Gundogan’s career was hampered by a series of injuries that kept him out of action for most of the next two seasons. He missed almost the entire 2013-14 season due to a back injury that also ruled him out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where Germany won their fourth title. He returned to action in October 2014 but suffered another setback when he dislocated his kneecap in May 2015. Gundogan managed to play only 16 games in two seasons for Dortmund.
Gundogan recovered from his injuries and regained his form in the 2015-16 season, where he helped Dortmund finish second in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich and reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League, where they lost to Liverpool on away goals after a thrilling tie. He scored three goals and provided seven assists in 40 games that season.
In June 2016, Gundogan signed for Manchester City for a fee of £20 million, becoming Pep Guardiola’s first signing as manager. He made his debut for the club in September 2016 against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League group stage and scored his first goal four days later against Bournemouth in the Premier League. However, he suffered another knee injury in December 2016 that sidelined him for several months.
Gundogan returned to action in September 2017 and became an integral part of Guardiola’s team that won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19, breaking several records along the way. He also won four EFL Cups, two FA Cups, and two Community Shields with City during this period. He scored six goals and provided eight assists in 49 games in all competitions in the 2017-18 season and five goals and seven assists in 50 games in all competitions in the 2018-19 season.
In the 2020-21 season, Gundogan had his best season in terms of goalscoring as he finished as City’s top scorer with 17 goals in all competitions, including 13 in the Premier League. He also provided six assists and won the Premier League Player of the Month award twice, in January and February 2021. He helped City win their third Premier League title in four years, their fourth consecutive EFL Cup, and reach their first-ever Champions League final, where they lost 1-0 to Chelsea.
In the 2021-22 season, Gundogan scored six goals and provided four assists in 44 games in all competitions, as City retained their Premier League title and EFL Cup and also won their first Champions League title, beating Chelsea 2-0 in the final.
