Early life and youth career

Andrea Belotti was born on 20 December 1993 in Calcinate, a small town near Bergamo in northern Italy. He is nicknamed Il Gallo (The Rooster) because of his childhood friend’s suggestion to celebrate his goals by mimicking a rooster’s comb with an open hand on his forehead. The Italian was a fan of AC Milan as a kid. He started playing football in the oratory school of Gorlago and with Grumellese. After failing a trial with Atalanta, he joined AlbinoLeffe’s youth system in 2006. He scored 13 goals for the youth team and won the Trofeo Dossena in 2012.

Professional career

Belotti made his debut for AlbinoLeffe’s first team in the 2011–12 season, playing eight matches and scoring two goals in Serie B. The following season, he scored 12 goals in 31 matches in Lega Pro Prima Divisione. In 2013, he was loaned to Palermo in Serie B for €500,000, with a buyout clause of €2.5 million. He made his debut for the Sicilians on 24 September 2013 and provided an assist to Kyle Lafferty. The prolific striker scored his first goal for Palermo on 26 October 2013, in a 2–1 win over Crotone. He helped Palermo win the Serie B title and promotion to Serie A in the 2013–14 season, scoring six goals in 28 matches.


In 2014, Palermo exercised the buyout clause and signed Belotti permanently for €5.5 million. Belotti made his Serie A debut on 31 August 2014, in a 1–1 draw against Sampdoria. He scored his first Serie A goal on 21 September 2014, in a 3–3 draw against Napoli. He finished the 2014–15 season with four goals in 38 matches. In 2015, he was sold to Torino for €8.4 million. The Italian striker made his debut for the Granata on 23 August 2015, in a 2–1 win over Frosinone. He scored his first goal for Torino on 13 September 2015, in a 2–0 win over Sampdoria. He finished the 2015–16 season with 12 goals in 35 matches.

2016 – present

In the 2016–17 season, Belotti had his best season to date, scoring 26 goals in 35 matches and finishing as the third-highest scorer in Serie A. He also scored his first hat-trick for Torino on 11 September 2016, in a 5–1 win over Bologna. He became the captain of Torino in 2017 and continued to be a prolific scorer for the club. Belotti scored 10 goals in 2017–18, 15 goals in 2018–19, 22 goals in 2019–20, 13 goals in 2020–21, and 12 goals in 2021–22. He left Torino in 2022 as their eighth-highest goalscorer of all time, with 100 goals in 232 matches. He joined Roma on a free transfer in 2022, and scored his first goal for the Giallorossi on 18 September 2022, in a 2–1 win over Sassuolo.

International career

Belotti represented Italy at various youth levels, scoring two goals in six matches for the under-19 team, four goals in nine matches for the under-20 team, and nine goals in 20 matches for the under-21 team. He took part in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2015, where he scored two goals in four matches. He made his senior debut for Italy on 1 September 2016, in a 3–1 win over Israel in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Belotti scored his first goal for Italy on 9 October 2016, in a 3–2 win over Macedonia in another World Cup qualifier. He was included in the Italy squad that won UEFA Euro 2020, scoring two goals in seven matches. Belotti also played in the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions in 2022, where Italy finished as runners-up.
