Early career

Giorgio Chiellini was born on August 14, 1984, in Pisa, Italy. He started playing football at the age of six for his hometown club, Livorno, where he progressed through the youth ranks. Chiellini made his senior debut for Livorno in 2000 when he was 16 years old. He played as a left-back and a central midfielder in his early years.

Roma and Fiorentina

In 2002, Chiellini was signed by Roma for €6.5 million, but he never played a game for the club. He was loaned back to Livorno for the 2002–03 season, where he helped the team win promotion to Serie A. The Italian star was then loaned to Fiorentina for the 2004–05 season, where he established himself as a regular starter and a promising defender. He scored three goals in 42 appearances for the Viola.

In 2005, Chiellini joined Juventus for €6.5 million, the same amount that Roma paid for him. He initially played as a left-back but later switched to his preferred position of center-back. He became a key player for the Bianconeri, forming a solid partnership with Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci. Chiellini won nine consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus from 2011–12 to 2019–20, as well as four Coppa Italia trophies and five Supercoppa Italiana titles. He also reached two UEFA Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017 but lost both to Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

In 2022, Chiellini left Juventus after 17 years and joined Los Angeles FC in the Major League Soccer. He signed a two-year contract with the option of a third year. He became the captain of the team and led them to win the MLS Cup in his first season. The defender also scored his first MLS goal in a 3–1 win over Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference final.

Chiellini represented Italy at all youth levels, and he won the European Under-19 Championship with Italy in 2003 and was also a member of the Italy team that won the bronze medal at the football tournament of the 2004 Summer Olympics. He made his senior debut for Italy in 2004, and since then he has been a regular member of the squad. He has played in four FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018) and four UEFA European Championships (2008, 2012, 2016, 2020). Chiellini was part of the Italy team that won the 2006 World Cup and the 2020 European Championship. He is the second-most capped player for Italy with 118 appearances, behind only Gianluigi Buffon.
