Former USMNT star claims Balogun chose USA because of England arrogance

Folarin Balogun has made a commitment to represent the United States at the international level, with Eric Wynalda asserting that his decision was influenced by what he perceives as “English arrogance.”

By declaring his allegiance to the country of his birth, the highly-regarded striker has put an end to the competition between the USMNT and Three Lions. Balogun, who was raised in London and previously represented England up to the U21 level, is now prepared to pursue an American dream. After FIFA approved his eligibility request, the New York native is ready to embark on this new international journey.

Balogun has been underestimated by Southgate

Former USMNT star Wynalda believes that England’s superiority complex has come back to haunt them when it comes to Balogun, telling The Action Network of some questionable comments from those in the Three Lions camp: “Gareth Southgate has certainly made some missteps here with his comments about the talented American playing in France. Southgate said: ‘We can’t just hand out international opportunities to a player simply because we don’t want them to play for somebody else’.

“Whoops – If he could take that one back now I think he would. Southgate has completely underestimated Folarin’s ability and tried to shrug it off. Sorry, but there are times where English arrogance needs to be illuminated and this is one of them.”

Balogun’s exceptional performance has made him a highly coveted asset both domestically and internationally. While on loan at Ligue 1 club Reims from Premier League powerhouse Arsenal, he has already scored 20 goals in the 2022-23 season.

The United States now has the opportunity to include Balogun in their plans, with ambitions of achieving success in the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup. However, the 21-year-old still confronts significant decisions on the domestic front.

Although he is contracted to Arsenal, he faces stiff competition for attacking positions at Emirates Stadium from players such as Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah.
