Lionel Messi to Play in Crucial MLS Game – Martino confirmed

Tata Martino, the boss of Inter Miami, has announced that Lionel Messi will play in a crucial MLS game against LAFC on Sunday.

A week ago, Martino gave Messi a break during the match against the New York Red Bulls. However, he included the Argentina international in the starting lineup in the recent game against Nashville SC.

Despite Messi failing to score in a rare goalless draw for the Herons, it seems unlikely that he will be on the bench again for the LAFC match. Martino has confirmed that the summer signing will participate in this crucial game for both teams.

“I don’t imagine in this very important match with the last champion that it is a match that Messi needs to rest up,” Martino told reporters. “The one we had to stop at was the Red Bulls team, he played 30 minutes, that’s how we did it this week and now tomorrow he’s going to play.”

It was believed that Lionel Messi might be rested for LAFC clash

Martino also emphasized that his side is up against a formidable challenge in LAFC, who currently hold the second position in the Western Conference table.

“In my opinion, LAFC is one of the best teams in the league, it is the last champion,” he added. “Carlos [Vela] is a decisive player within the team structure and [Denis] Bouanga is also decisive, Illie is also decisive, they have a very solid central duo, and there is also a team that is supporting all the individualities, for us it will be a good measure and tomorrow’s game will be a great challenge.”

In their previous match, Messi and Miami were unable to secure a goal and ended up with a 0-0 draw against Nashville SC.

However, they cannot afford to lose more points if they intend to qualify for the playoffs. Since Messi joined the team, the Herons have shown improvement and are currently on a 10-game unbeaten streak. Nevertheless, they are still 10 points away from securing a playoff spot.

Messi’s upcoming match on Sunday will mark his final appearance for Inter Miami before he joins the Argentina national team for international duty.

During this period, Messi will be absent for some crucial games for Martino’s team, as he represents Argentina in their World Cup 2026 qualifying matches against Ecuador and Bolivia.
