Inter Miami sacked Phil Neville in June, and he is set to assume the role of the new head coach for the Portland Timbers.
According to The Athletic, the Portland Timbers are on the verge of hiring the former Inter Miami boss, just a few months after the Herons dismissed him. The Western Conference side has had a head coach vacancy since they sacked their former boss, Gio Savarese, in August of this year.
Poor performance and an acrimonious departure marked Neville’s time at Inter Miami. They dismissed him on June 1, and before that, he consistently declined to take responsibility for a series of disappointing results.
Instead of taking accountability, he shifted blame onto the opposition, accused referees of cheating, and even questioned their decisions. His overall record with the Herons was 31 wins, 41 losses, and 11 draws.
The Timbers are an organization with a strong foundation and top-tier players. Several coaches, with a history of promising performance and a deep understanding of the league, seem more qualified. However, Phil Neville stands out due to his big name, even though he has previously struggled in the league and during his tenure with the English Women’s national team.
Following their failure to qualify for the 2023 MLS playoffs, the Timbers have entered the offseason, with the primary focus on securing this coaching hire.
