Atlanta United star Giorgos Giakoumakis has opened up on winning the MLS Newcomer of the Year award over Lionel Messi.
Giorgos Giakoumakis best Lionel Messi to the MLS Newcomer of the Year award last week. He managed to score 17 goals in 27 games for the Five Stripes in his debut season. The 28-year-old striker joined Atlanta United from Celtic last February.
In an interview with the Athletic, Giakoumakis said this award means a lot to him because he won over Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.
“I’m really happy and satisfied for winning this trophy,” the striker said. “It has a different gravity when you win and you’re competing against Messi. So I think the gravity of this prize is even bigger right now.”
Atlanta will face the Columbus Crew on Tuesday night in game two of their best-of-three series in the MLS playoffs.
