Argentina legend Lionel Messi admits he regrets his famous celebration after scoring against the Netherlands in the World Cup quarter-final.
After scoring Argentina’s second goal in the quarter-final, Lionel Messi decided to celebrate his goal in a very peculiar way by cupping his ears while staring at the Netherlands bench.
Van Gaal’s comments before the match which said Messi does not participate in team play off the ball was taken as disrespect, and that made Messi make the gesture at him.
In a recent interview with ESPN, Messi revealed he instantly regretted making the gesture.
Messi said: “I came up with the ‘Topo Gigio’ [the goal celebration in which a player puts his hands to his ears as a sign of defying someone] right there and I automatically regretted it. As soon as I did it I thought: ‘What an idiot. They can still tie it.’ These things usually happen.”
The game went to penalties after it finished 2-2 in normal time after Wout Weghorst dramatically equalised late in stoppage time. Argentina beat the Netherlands on penalties in the quarter-final of the Qatar 2022 World Cup and won the trophy in the end.
