Dean Smith set to become the new Charlotte FC boss

Former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is poised to become the new head coach of MLS side Charlotte FC.

Although both Smith and Frank Lampard were interviewed for the position, sources suggest that Smith is the preferred choice over the former Everton manager. He is set to replace Christian Lattanzio, who left the club in November.

Lattanzio initially joined Charlotte FC as an assistant under former head coach Miguel Angel Ramirez and later served as the interim manager when Ramirez departed the team 14 games into The Crown’s inaugural 2022 season. While a spokesperson mentioned that no final decision has been officially announced, insiders maintain that Smith is leading the race for the role.

Christian Lattanzio led Charlotte FC to a record of 22 wins, 24 losses, and 17 draws during his year-and-a-half tenure as head coach. Under his guidance, the team secured a playoff Wild Card spot in 2023, marking the first time in the club’s history.

However, they were defeated 5-2 by the New York Red Bulls in the playoffs. Now, Dean Smith is set to take charge of the expansion team. Smith arrives after managing Leicester, where he faced the challenge of avoiding relegation in the season’s final eight games.

He also had a successful three-year stint with Aston Villa, guiding the club back to the Premier League from the Championship. As Charlotte FC prepares for its third MLS season, Smith’s experience will be crucial, especially considering the team’s quest for its first major trophy since its inaugural season in 2022.
