Arias ends European stint after over a decade
the 31-year-old Santiago Arias signs for FC Cincinnati from Atletico Madrid. Arias’ contract will end in 2023 but has an option for another year.
Arias joined Sporting CP in 2011 and after a two-year stint went to PSV. Arias played for PSV Eindhoven from 2013 to 2018. He then went to Atletico Madrid where he mainly was loaned out for the 4 seasons he was there.
“Santi brings an enormous amount of experience and ability to FC Cincinnati,” said Chris Albright, FC Cincinnati General Manager. “His defensive instincts, character, and overall quality is a welcome addition to the group and I’d like to welcome him and his family to Cincinnati.”
Arias won 3 Eredivisie titles with PSV and a Supercup with Atletico Madrid. However, he spent two of the four seasons he stayed at Atletico on loan at Bayer Leverkusen and Granada. While his stint as Leverkusen was disastrous with him playing only a game, he managed 12 matches at Granada last year.
Arias has also played for Colombia 54 times and represented the country in two World Cups as well as achieving third place in Copa America once.
