Argentina coach Scaloni defends Messi for winning FIFA The Best award

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni says Lionel Messi deserved to win the FIFA The Best Men’s Player prize.

Lionel Messi won The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2023 in January, retaining the title he won in 2022. Inter Miami star beat Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to win the FIFA award.

Lionel Messi’s latest FIFA Best triumph stirred controversy, and national team coaches and captains received criticism for their votes.

Argentina legend only won the Ligue 1 with PSG and the Leagues Cup with Inter Miami in 2023. Haaland helped Manchester City to win the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup.

However, Lionel Scaloni believes there is no debate over whether Lionel Messi deserved to win the FIFA Best Men’s Player award.

“I think the debate goes beyond football, I don’t think there is a debate between the footballer or the coach as to why he won it,” Scaloni told Marca. “If Haaland or Mbappe had won it, it would have been fine too. It’s media stuff. Debating why Messi won it when football people vote is strange.”

The 36-year-old Messi currently is getting ready for the new season of MLS in late February. Inter Miami will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr in a friendly match next week.
