Messi says Inter Miami ready to ‘fight for MLS title’ after demolishing Orlando City in Florida Derby

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi says they are ready to fight for the MLS title this season after a 5-0 thrashing of rivals Orlando City.

Messi and Suarez scored two goals each as Inter Miami routed Florida rivals Orlando City 5-0 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday. Robert Taylor scored the fifth goal for Inter Miami.

This was Inter Miami’s biggest win since the club played its first game in January 2020. They are now at the top of the MLS table with seven points after three matches.

I think that with the pressure on us, we’re conscious of the team, and what we’ve built and we are going to prepare ourselves to fight for the MLS title,” Messi said during a postgame interview with Apple TV. “We know that is a long road and it’s just getting started, but the reality is that all of us are aware that we have a group ready to compete and we are going to go for it. It is also important that we start the season off well, especially in the first few games because then the league will pause, and other tournaments will begin.”

The Argentine legend also said he is happy with their start to the season ahead of the international break. Argentina will play El Salvador on March 22 and Costa Rica on March 26.

It’s really good to arrive with a little breathing room at this checkpoint that we set on ourselves,” Messi said. “To start off in this manner and get the most points possible before tournaments like Copa America, Leagues Cup, and everything that is yet to come.”

Inter Miami next will face Nashville SC in the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 on Wednesday.
