Messi injury to be evaluated ‘week by week’, says Inter Miami coach Martino

Inter Miami head coach Gerardo Martino has provided an injury update on Lionel Messi after he missed Saturday’s win at D.C. United.

Lionel Messi missed Inter Miami’s 3-2 loss to Montreal in MLS last Sunday but scored in a 3-1 victory over Nashville in the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday. However, the Argentina legend once again was absent in a 3-1 victory against D.C. United in MLS on Saturday.

Luis Suarez scored twice as a substitute in the second half to help Miami move to the top of the MLS Eastern Conference league.

After the match, Gerardo Martino revealed Messi’s leg muscle injury will be evaluated ‘week by week’.

Messi’s injury must be dealt with week by week, and we will evaluate it,” Martino said. “What is clear is that there is a goal with him, which is to play in the Concacaf quarterfinals.

He has a muscle injury. The selection issue is for the people of the national team to talk about.”

Messi is to join up with the Argentina squad for two friendlies against El Salvador and Costa Rica.

Miami will play against New York City FC in MLS on March 30. They will play Liga MX’s CF Monterrey in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
