“It must be controlled”, Manchester City star Rodri demands financial restrictions for Saudi Arabia

Manchester City star Rodri Hernandez has urged FIFA or UEFA to control Saudi Arabia’s spending powers.

Saudi clubs spent £784m during the summer transfer window to sign many big-name players from the European market.

Ahead of Spain’s match against Georgia on Friday, Rodri said he understands why players decided to join the Saudi Pro League this summer.

“Evidently, European football loses in this situation and it is a very particular opinion of the players who decide to go out to these leagues. It is totally understandable due to the amounts of money they offer. I think it’s a personal issue for everyone to decide for themselves.”

Manchester City received €62.5m in transfer fees for selling Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte to Saudi clubs this summer.

Rodri also demanded that the governing bodies in football put financial restrictions on Saudi Arabia’s spending power.

“It must be controlled in some way this drain of talent because at first it seemed like it was just veterans in the twilight of their careers, but there are young people now who are leaving. They are respectable decisions, but the people who take action must control this situation,” Rodri told Cadena SER.

Spain will face Georgia tonight in the Euro 2024 qualifiers round and then play with Cyprus on Tuesday.
